The Word of God Fall
Retreat 11/14-16/03
Preparing the Bride: Talk # 5
"Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come along"
Comment regarding impact
Not enough to hear these truths or
know them
Need to be changed by the Word of God
and the Holy Spirit
Open ourselves to the Lord and pray
them – not necessarily the very words, but the truths
Things about the Bridegroom: turn them
into worship
Things about the Bride: turn them into
thanksgiving and ask the Lord to establish them in our life
Introduction
Ephesians 5:25-30
Husbands, love your wives, just as
Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He
might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with
the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory,
having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy
and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their
own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever
hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just a Christ also
does the church, because we are members of His body.
We are seeking to grasp God’s Word to
us regarding
- Our being Christ’s bride
- Promise & process of
preparation
- Christ’s nourishing and
cherishing love for his bride
Out of the comfort zone
Song of Songs 2:8-10
8Listen! My beloved! Behold, he is coming,
Climbing on the mountains,
Leaping on the hills!
9My beloved is like a
gazelle or a young stag.
Behold, he is standing behind our
wall;
He is looking through the windows;
He is peering through the lattice.
10My beloved responded, and
said to me,
Arise, my darling, my beautiful one,
and come along.
- Vision of Jesus as Sovereign King
- Effortlessly conquering
obstacles and opposition
- Practical, human, spiritual
problems are no problem to him
- Mt 28:16 – 19
But the eleven disciples
proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. When
they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. And Jesus
came up and spoke to them saying. "all authority has been given to Me
in heaven and on earth. Go therefore…"
Call to come along and disciple
the nations is rooted in same vision of Jesus as the possessor of all
authority.
- Comes to the Bride in the comfort
zone of his own making!
- He was feeding her apples &
raisins under the banner of love earlier
- He instructed the daughters of
Jerusalem not to disturb her
- The wall in v. 9 is ‘our wall’
- Now in his timing he has
determined it is the moment to disturb her
- Never intended her to be in
total isolation, the wall had windows and lattices so that he could
communicate with her and she could look out on the world
- She thinks he is behind
the wall, when it is actually her who is behind the wall. He is
out on the mountains & hills, in the wide world
- He addresses her in love
- Not ‘get up and get going’
- My darling, my beautiful one –
I like you and you look good!
- Not just called to service but
into intimacy. Divine romance.
- Call is to rise up / come along –
this is not what she expected based on the shade, fruit, banner!
- Following in faith involves
risk
- Those mountains contain lions
and leopards (4:7-8). Spiritual warfare with ‘our adversary the devil’
is involved (1 Pt 5:8)
- Jesus is calling her to move
from simply being a worshiper to being a worshiping warrior
- Calls her to join him,
not to venture off on her own
- Even the Great Commission to
‘go’ is accompanied by the promise ‘I am with you’
- Bride’s destiny is to enter
into the mandate that the Father has given the Son
- She joins him in a partnership.
Jesus’ inheritance is to have a ‘helper fit for him’
The time is right
Song of Songs 2:10-13
"My beloved responded and said to
me,
‘Arise, my darling, my beautiful one,
and come along.
‘For behold, the winter is past, the
rain is over and gone.
‘The flowers have already appeared in
the land;
The time has arrived for pruning the vines,
and the voice of the turtledove has been heard in our land.
‘The fig tree has ripened its figs,
‘And the vines in blossom have given
forth their fragrance.
Arise my darling, my beautiful one,
And come along!’"
- Winter is past …
- Reminds her that he was
faithful to her in the bitter winter season (anger of her mother’s
sons, etc.). that is past.
- Rain is over – those trials are
past and He helped her
- Lord brings us through trials
to give us experience of his faithfulness
- Time of harvest is coming
- flowers appearing, early figs
ripening, vines in blossom, turtledove – season of fruitfulness is
around the corner
- encouragement to arise – join
in the soon to be harvest
- Jn 4:35
Do you not say, ‘There are yet four
months and then comes the harvest?’ Behold I say to you, lift up your
eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.
- Apostles had arisen from their
fishing, tax collecting, etc. to ‘come along’ Still going to be a
little while but signs of the harvest already being seen
Mt 11:4-6 4Jesus
replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5The
blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured,
the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to
the poor. 6Blessed is the man who does not fall away on
account of me."
- Harvest of Day of Pentecost and
Book of Acts is on its way, so come with me and get prepared now.
- Lord has spoken this word to us:
"I have told you again and again that
I am coming. I tell you I am here. I tell you I am with you. The time
is now at hand. I have need of you. Rise up; rise up but draw together
around me. Do not look yet to the battle that lies ahead. Look only to
me. Draw near to me. My arms are wide enough and great enough to
embrace you all. Draw near to me. Draw near to my heart for I will
reveal my plans to you, and I will show you the part that I have given
you to play. You are little, you are small, but I can use you. It is
not your power; it is mine. It is not your will; it is my Spirit. Keep
your gaze fixed on me. Rise up from the bench. Gather around Me. Stay
very near to Me and I will speak, says the Lord." Community Conference
September 2001
- Lord repeats the invitation
indicating his urgency, but still in the same endearing terms SS 2:13b
- Issue here is not salvation. We
can stay in our comfort zone as redeemed people, but the Lord extends
an invitation to come with him
- Response to Bride’s prayer of
‘Draw me after you and let us run together’ in SS 1:4
- This is the call we have heard
and sought to respond to as expressed in our covenant:
In order to respond to what God is
doing among us, in order to express more fully how we are to be the
people He is calling us to be, once again we declare our desire to give
our whole lives to Him, to follow His Son, Jesus, and to live more and
more in the Holy Spirit. We desire to love and serve Him in lives of
daily prayer and service; to praise and worship Him always; to ever
seek His face; to know and serve the truth of His Word in the joy,
peace, and love of the Holy Spirit; to believe what He speaks to us and
to be obedient to the truth of His Word and the guidance of His Spirit;
to offer hospitality to those whom He sends us; to widen our hearts to
receive those He adds to our number; and to carry out the mission that
He is entrusting to us.
Go ahead without me
Song of Songs 2:15-17
15Catch the foxes for us,
The little foxes that are ruining the
vineyards,
While our vineyards are in blossom."
16 My beloved is mine, and I am his;
He pastures his flock among the lilies.
17 Until the cool of the day when the
shadows flee away,
Turn, my beloved, and be like a gazelle
Or a young stag on the mountains of
Bether."
- Bride struggles with her fear and
compromise in face of Lord’s invitation
- Her conclusion is to tell him to
‘turn’ and go to the mountains alone
- She knows she can’t change him
John 5:17 But He answered them,
"My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working."
- Bride recognizes that there are
areas in her life that eat away at her spiritual life
- Little foxes that are ruining
the vineyard
- Not roaring lions but little
areas of sin, compromise, unbelief, temptation
- Grapes are tender, immature
- Jesus, the Vine is her source
of life, but fruit is getting stolen and destroyed
- Bride recognizes that she needs
help – cries out for Lord to catch the foxes
- Even in the midst of her
struggle, so has not stopped being a lover of God
- My beloved is
mine, and I am his
- She is making a confession that
the Lord has not given up on her
- She is not an open rebel, but
weak and immature. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak
- For now, until the shadows of
weakness and compromise are gone, she can’t go
- Acknowledging the darkness, and
also a plea for help
- Result is that the Bridegroom
goes to the mountains of Bether – means separation!
Let me hear your voice
Song of Songs 2:14
"O my dove, in the clefts of the
rock,
In the secret place of the steep
pathway,
Let me see your form,
Let me hear your voice;
For your voice is sweet,
And your form is lovely."
- Even before she gives in to her
unbelief and fear, the Lord knew she would fail to respond to his call
to arise
- Despite this he continues to
address her as ‘my darling, my beautiful one’
- We think that the Lord is shocked
and disappointed when we stumble and fail, because we are
- Reveals that we were putting
too much confidence in our flesh!
- Because we take offence when
people fail does not mean that God does
Seek the LORD while He may be
found;
Call upon Him while He is near.
Let the wicked forsake his way
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
And let him return to the LORD,
And He will have compassion on him,
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon.
"For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways," declares
the LORD.
"For as the heavens are higher than
the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts.
- It is precisely in regard to weak
and sinful people that God declares his thoughts and ways infinitely
higher than ours!
- In his mercy He makes provision
in advance for her, instructing her how she can find her way through
the coming crisis of separation
- in the clefts of the rock
- God hid Moses in the cleft of
the rock and covered him with his hand so that he would not be consumed
by seeing his holiness Ex 33:22
- Jesus is the Rock which
brought water and salvation to the Israelites in desert
- It is through the torn veil
or cleft of his flesh that we draw near with full assurance
- Heb 10:19-22
Therefore, brethren, since we have
confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and
living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His
flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us
draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our
hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed
with pure water.
- In the secret place of the
steep pathway
- Steep pathway or ascent speaks
of the resurrection
- Secret place or mystery of
resurrection which exceeds our ability to understand
- Let me see your form .. your
form is lovely
- Jesus views the Bride through
the lens of his cleft flesh upon the cross and the mystery of his
resurrection – he sees her in redemption
- Bride must come to see herself
this way, too, if she is going to have hope and power to overcome
weakness, compromise, assault of enemy, unbelief
- Let me hear your voice, for
your voice is sweet
- Tempted to think that we will
be rejected when we cry out for help. He only wants to hear from the
strong
- The voice of his weak, immature
bride is sweet to him
- Heb 4:14-16
Therefore, since we have a great
high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God,
let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who
cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in
all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with
confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and
find grace to help in time of need.
- In the midst of our struggle we
are invited to the very throne and assured of grace and mercy
- The Bridegroom has faced the very
same struggles so he can sympathize with our weakness
- He has been victorious in the
face of temptation, so he can help us
- Knowing this, doing this, allows
us to hold fast our confession, ‘My Beloved is mine, and I am his’ SS
3:16a
- SS 3:16b He pastures his
flock among the lilies
- She recognizes that he also has
provided for her among the lilies, among the redeemed. She needs to
stay in fellowship with them
I sought him and did not find him
Song of Songs 3:1-3
1 "On my bed night after night I
sought him
Whom my soul loves;
I sought him but did not find him.
2 'I must arise now and go about the
city;
In the streets and in the squares
I must seek him whom my soul loves.'
I sought him but did not find him.
3"The watchmen who make the rounds in
the city found me,
And I said, 'Have you seen him
whom my soul loves?'
Bride’s disobedience, even though it
is out of unbelief, weakness, and fear, results in a separation which
brings on a spiritual crisis.
- New experience for her to seek
him & not find him. She is used to the couch, the shade, the table
- What is going on?
- He has not abandoned her
because he has promised
- Heb 13:5 for He Himself has
said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU
- Not leaving her in terms of her
salvation
- He will never abandon us to a
temptation greater than we can bear
- I Cor 10:13 No temptation
has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful,
who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with
the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be
able to endure it.
- He has removed her experience of
her presence – not like 1:12-17 and 2:1-6
- Disciplining her strategically,
lovingly, in just the right way
- To point out problems
- To humble us to realize our
need for him
- To stir up a deeper hunger for
him – realize we cannot live without him!
- To teach us to walk by faith
and not by sight
- As if removing the right hand of
embrace while maintaining the unseen left hand under her head SS 2:6
& 8:3
- Divine correction is not divine
rejection! It comes from his fiery affection for us
FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE
DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES." It is for
discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons… He
disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. All
discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to
those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful
fruit of righteousness.
- If we can see the magnitude of
the destiny God is planning for us in Christ as his bridal partner, we
can understand the need for the discipline
- Rev 3:21 21 'He who
overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I
also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
Even though she is in the night, the
Bride still seeks
- Night speaks of moral failure, or
circumstantial difficulties, or spiritual isolation
- On her bed vs. our
bed or couch of 1:16 – not sensing that companionship
- Also on her bed vs.
arising – not doing what the Lord asked her to do, arise
- She is seeking – 4 times in 2
verses – not given up on going after God
- Whom my soul loves – 3 times in 3
verses – not given up on being a lover of God
- Even though she has failed, she
can still call Jesus the one she loves
Bride moves from seeking to obeying -- I must arise now
- Arising is what this season of
discipline is all about
- Going about the city, streets,
squares, not yet the mountains, but at least out in place of
interaction and ministry
- This is where she will encounter
Jesus in v4
Humbles herself to seek help from
others, from spiritual leaders – who have seen the Lord
I held on to him and would not let him go
Song of Songs 3:4
Scarcely had I left them
When I found him whom my soul loves;
I held on to him and would not let him go
Until I had brought him to my mother's house,
And into the room of her who conceived me.
- At the right time, according to
his timing, Lord lets her ‘find’ him again
- Now her love has been
strengthened. Discipline accomplished its purpose. She arose, her love
is deepened
- Held on to him, not let him go
- Like Jacob wrestling with the
Lord
- Like the Marys &
resurrected Jesus Mt 28:9, Jn 20:17
- Renewed fervor
- Renewed care regarding her walk
with him – not let him go
- She brings him into her
relationships
- Mother speaks of the church –
those who do Jesus’ will are his mother and brothers Mt 12:46-50
- Bride is bringing her renewed
vision of Jesus & her understanding of his deep love for her into
her most significant relationships
Bridegroom’s care for his Bride
Song of Songs 3:5
"I adjure you, O daughters of
Jerusalem,
By the gazelles or by the hinds of the
field,
That you will not arouse or awaken my
love
Until she pleases."
- Having brought her through the
discipline, Jesus now provides a season of rest for the Bride
- Demonstrates his perfect planning
and his loving care for us
- Doesn’t have a
one-size-fits-all boilerplate plan for perfecting his Bride, but
designs and controls the seasons of our lives and his work in us to
perfection for our good
- Eph 1:22-23 And God placed
all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything
for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills
everything in every way.
- Doesn’t want us disrupting his
plans for his bride with our opinions or criticisms or even good ideas
- Jesus is the one preparing his
Bride out of his own passion through wooing and discipline to produce a
lovesick and purified partner
Summary
- Our identity as the Lord’s Bride
and our vision of the Beauty of the Lord is preparation for Bridal
Partnership
- Partnership involves entering into his mandate to disciple the
nations, arising & leaping on the mountains with him
- This will challenge our comfort zone, expose our weak flesh,
and our unbelief
- Lord is so committed to us fulfilling our destiny as his Bride
that he custom designs disipline to draw us after him, make us love
sick for him, cause us to come out of our comfort zone and run with him
- Making the first commandment first leads to fulfilling the
second commandment and the Great Commission
